Crew FAQs
Can’t find the answer to your question? Contact Crewbay for more information
- Can I update my profile on the Crew Message Board when my situation changes?
- You can update/change/edit your profile and photograph on the Crew Message Board whenever you like which is great if your circumstances change, or you want to add more information about yourself.
- Can I delete my profile when I find a crew position?
- Yes, just sign-in to Crewbay using your username and password to delete your profile.
- How can boat owners and skippers contact me?
- When you have registered either free or as a full member, boat owners and skippers will be able to email you directly from your profile on the Crew Message Board. If you register as a full member, you have the option of posting your telephone number and mobile number as well as your email address. (Boat owners will not see your email address, they can contact you via an email form which says ‘email member’).
- I have no experience boating, can I get a position anyway?
- Sailing can be for everyone regardless of age or experience. Many of the positions advertised on Crewbay are for amateur crew or sailing companions. Sailing is not only about pulling ropes, and wind! - there are many important duties on board ranging from watch-keeping to cooking, all vital skills for a good crew member. Many skippers are looking for sailing companions or people who are keen and willing to learn who show lots of enthusiasm for a shared hobby.
- How do I know that a boat in which I am interested hasn’t already found crew?
- There is no guarantee that a boat in which you are interested has not already found crew, however we endeavour to make sure all boats on Crewbay are updated regularly, and we ask our skippers and boat owners to give us a ‘crew needed’ date which is the date that their boat will be automatically deleted. Boats are listed on the database in order of last login so the vessels near the top of each category are actively seeking crew. If you come across a boat which has already found crew, please send us an email so we can deactivate the advert. At Crewbay we do our best to ensure all of the boats still need crew.
- Am I too old to learn to sail or to crew?
- Sailing and boating are great activities, and one of the best things about it is that they’re available to everyone. Whilst your mast-climbing days may be behind you, there are no excuses for not getting involved and sailing the high seas. Being a crew member on any boat demands many skills, lots of which are not demonstrated through physical strength. Many of our crew members and skippers are over 60, both male and female.
- Should I pay a boat owner/skipper to crew on their boat?
- This depends entirely on your level of skill, relevant qualifications, and the choice of the skipper. It is not unusual for skippers to ask for a contribution from crew towards the costs of the vessel and housekeeping, such as marina fees, petrol, food etc. and there is no set fee for this contribution. We advise you to ensure both you and the skipper arrange a fair financial contribution before you join the vessel, this will also prevent any awkward situations later!
- Can I join Crewbay with a friend or as a couple?
- Yes, simply tick the ‘register with a friend or as a couple’ box on the crew registration form. This will create a double profile on the Crew Message Board, so skippers looking for more than one crew member can view your profiles together.
- I have registered with Crewbay, what can I do now?
- Browse through the database of boats needing crew and contact the skippers of the boats in which you are interested. Remember to leave as many contact details as you can as skippers could be at sea for a while and may not have access to the internet! Update your profile regularly so that your message stays at the top of the Crew Message Board, and skippers can see that you are still available to crew. We recommend uploading your photograph alongside your profile which you can do by signing in and clicking ‘Add Photo’. Don’t forget you can also upload you CV. If you require any assistance, contact the Crewbay team at contact@crewbay.com and we will be happy to help.
- How long will my free crew registration last for?
- Your free crew registration will last for six weeks. After this time it will automatically be deactivated from Crewbay. This is to ensure all crew on the Crew Message Board are actively seeking crew positions. If after this time you are still looking for a crew position simply sign in to reactivate your profile. If you would like to access the contact details of boats on Crewbay you must register as a full Crewbay member.
