Sharing life on board

Hi there beautiful people,
I am Mat, and together with my partner Kate we bought our first boat ever 2 years ago in the Netherlands and sailed down to north Spain (Aviles) where we did some first boat jobs during the winter. Quite early — in February — we sailed on to Galicia where we've spent a wonderful summer cruising the Rias!

Later we cruised down due south along the Portuguese coast and explored the Algarve — before hauling out Tailwind in Olhao and spending the next 5 months renewing the bottom (we anticipated 6 weeks hahaha, ended up with muuuuch more work, of course, in order to succesfully apply permanent Copper Coat antifouling, which was our inicial goal).

Back in the water we discovered the Guadiana and we fell in love with the river! Haing the great opportunity of taking care of a small garden (and a Finca with a big garden, partially) we will hibernate here until March 2026.
Till then, working on the deck (anti-skid paint), a DIY e-outboard conversion, constructing a DIY wind vane self-steering (Wharram Design), and minor interior stuff are on the list in order to get ready for extensive cruising starting from April 2026. If interested in helping with boatwork/sharing boatlife and exploring this stunning river environment, hit us up ;)

We are happy to welcome short-term crew to share life aboard – but also look forward to forming lasting relations for some exciting undertaking in the future, be it a passage to the Baleric Islands, or Madeira, cruising the Canaries and ultimately an Atlantic crossing in the upcoming years :) If you're looking for a partner at sea, let's get in touch!

If you'd like to get to know us & read some of our nomadic life stories in our newsletter or want to check out our webpage to discover the full vision of our project, let us know. We are happy to share it with you!

Talk to you soon and fair winds to those who sail :)

Mat & Kate

  • Boat descriptionUPDATE: Currently wintering in the Guadiana River / working on the deck paint, DIY e-outboard, DIY wind vane self-steering (Wharram Design), and minor interior stuff. If interested in boatwork/boatlife, hit us up ;) Our Apache 41 is a catamaran with 4 cabins, where we can host up to 8 beautiful people. Some of the cabins come with their own sink, space to store personal things and retreat for a rest. The boat has a fully equipped kitchen, where we like to experiment: baking our sourdough bread, prepare all kind of (fish) dishes or process whatever the surroundings have to offer in the current season. Lately we build in a watermaker and we are dancing every time we don't have to rush anywhere to get some drinking water. The sinks have 3 taps: fresh, drinking and salt water. The saloon provides little oil heater called Antarctic for colder days (now not in use, as the temperatures rise), desk & sofa and library, which will host you with interesting books of sailing topics but also exciting novels. We like to make music and therefore there is guitar on board and saucepans to drum :). The shared bathroom with shower and toilet with everything to satisfy minimalistic hygiene needs is something we barely use, as we prefer our spacious aft deck to serve as an open-air bathroom. Setting up a tarp for privacy isn't a problem. There's a little workshop in port hull and all kind of tools for all kinds of projects. Deck is roomy and gives enough space to comfortably move around, do yoga or just enjoy sunrises. Relax in cockpit or discover surroundings of our current stay. Back aft you'll find a wooden deck area, forward there are two nets to chill (or sleep in on warm dry night :) and plenty of space in between. Our cat is for now equipped with 2 diesel engines of 27hp which in future could be replaced for electric engines- yes we would like to have our blue surroundings nice clean. We are cruisers – and therefore not the fastest. In nautical speed we talk about an average speed of approx. 5 knots. By installing a Victron based solar system (1300Wp/660Ah) we are super happy to be independent in terms of electricity – in fact we produce enough to run an electric water kettle, we cook and bake electrically and we run the watermaker. We provides some sailing clothing for passages (will be best if you have your own), epirb, life vests. The boat is equipped with fire extinguishers, CO-alarms, an 8 persons life raft, an EPIRB, and a STARLINK. Accompanied by a Walker Bay dinghy, reaching the shore (as we're mainly living off-grid on anchor) is just a matter of a short rowing pleasure! Currently working on the sailing rig, the dinghy will be sailable, too, soon :)) Of course, we have a small outboard in case (and working on an electric one, too) as well as a SUP for the crew to use. Our lovely lady is 52 years old this year, and one should be expecting all but shiny fancy boat. But we love her and she loves us, because we work every day to make it a nicer and cosier place to live :) In this sense, it's the perfect boat for those who want not only to sail and discover but also learn about boat work, maintenance and DIY re-fit & upgrades.
