Mechanic/Deckhand - Temporary / Seasonal - Saint Lucia
Currently in St. Lucia. Going up the Windwards and Leewards. Final destination this season? St Croix?
Prefer experience with a wooden ship/full keel sailing ketch but, as there are not a lot of those out there...just verified sailing experience on sailboats 20m and above. (She's 27 meters.) Experience on older vessels preferred since everything is manual.
We are also looking for someone familiar with woodworking and mechanical/electrical experience. As she is wooden, there is always something in need of repair or maintenance. (256hp Man engine, generator, watermaker, hydraulic steering and anchor winch), 2 outboard motors and a dinghy. If you have experience in this, we're willing to teach the sailing part!)
Great attitude, great cook, willing to learn, all good attributes but not a persuasive argument. This is not a training boat for those looking for a sailing position, this is a sailing ship! It requires advanced sailing abilities and understanding. It is ketch rigged and did I mention ALL manual which requires real experience. (Unless you are wanting to fill the engineering/ woodworking position). She can run up to 5 sails with all sheets handled on deck.
Watermaker, full electric galley, generator and inverter, Starlink for weather updates (limited personal communication), interior wheelhouse. Smoking ship except in cabin areas, below deck, and engine room.
Opportunity to stay onboard as we sail up the coast to the Windward/Leewards and build our charter business. (Not a party boat. Charters will be limited to a maximum of 12 guests.) Potential for paid position 30 days after start if both parties are good with each other.
First 30 days room and board provided. After 30 days room and board and base compensation supplemented by charters. Non restricted diets only.
Expected duties, helming, watch keeping, shared cooking, shared cleaning inside and out, stainless, bright work (and all that goes with maintaining a wooden ship) sail plan changes (hoisting, trimming, stowing sails), maintenance.
She's one of a kind in the Caribbean. Gulets (which she is) can't cross the Atlantic. We did. Our Belle Ayaz is our home and for the right crew member she can be yours too.
