1st Mate - Temporary / Seasonal - South Africa
SV Thabiti is seeking an experienced 1st Mate for a bluewater passage along the East African coast, departing Richards Bay, South Africa, northbound through Mozambique toward the Seychelles and ultimately Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a qualified sailor — Yachtmaster Offshore or equivalent — looking to accumulate offshore miles on a serious bluewater passage through some of the most beautiful and least-sailed cruising grounds in the world. The route takes in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Ilha de Moçambique, the Quirimbas, Mafia Island and the Tanzanian coast.
Primary duties include standing independent watches, sail handling, navigation, and helping manage the vessel safely at sea and in anchorages. Thabiti is a 15.5m GRP sloop displacing 19 tonnes, well equipped for offshore work. She has three en suite double cabins, Raymarine instruments, AIS, Starlink, autopilot, watermaker and a full safety kit.
What to expect onboard: this is a cruising passage, not a delivery. We anchor in beautiful places, explore ashore, take our time. The skipper values competence, good humour, self-sufficiency and a willingness to share responsibilities. Cooking on rotation, shared passage planning, genuine teamwork.
All onboard expenses covered.
