Malaysia to the Med via the Red Sea
I’ve been cruising seasonally since 2015 starting in the Chesapeake hoping to get around the world. The boat is currently on the hard in Malaysia. getting a fairly extensive refit - engine rebuild, new sails, new lithium battery bank, new paint etc. All this means that most systems will be working on the first day of the trip and then the usual work begins on the second day. If we didn’t have boat work what would we do with our spare time.
The plan is to start sailing west in early January with a week stop in Sri Lanka, several days in the Maldives, a week in Socotra, a week in Djibouti and then north through the Red Sea to the Suez Canal. Possible stops in Sudan and Egypt depending on current events. I plan to stop in Cyprus or Turkey to leave the boat for several months.
The boat is a Whitby 42 and there is plenty of information on-line regarding its blue water capabilities. Also there is plenty of information on the sailing the Red Sea and the current situation. This route is definitely not for everybody. From talking to fellow sailors there will be around 50 boats sailing through the Red Sea this season.
One potential bonus is the next time you’re having too many beers with your friends you won’t have to worry about someone topping your latest travel story.
I’ll cover all on board expenses. A contribution for food would be appreciated. Also some countries have visa fees. I’m still researching that.
