Watch: The Grateful Sailor

Southern spain

July 20; in Ibiza for a few months. If you want to do cruising around the island for a few days to a week, this a very affordable way to share expenses on a high end sailboat. €100/day for August.
Duane

For the past 18 months, Grateful has been all thru the Mediterranean and out to the canaries. I am a full time live-aboard. So far there have been dozens of crew and passengers on this boat, and everyone goes away with the biggest smiles on their faces...nothing could make me happier.
after an exhilarating fast ride of about 750 nautical miles up the Atlantic from Canaries to Portugal. Hundreds of Dolphins, Killer whales, Baluga whales, sea turtles, super fast downwind sailing, incredible sunsets...yep, this is sailing.

So, now its time to cruise portugal for a month or so, then head east, into the Med.
As always, looking for cool, like-minded people to share the ride! Figure 50 euro a day to share the expenses.
We have space for 4 more crew. Please be willing to pitch in with everything. Please don’t be a picky eater, unless you want to always cook and clean for yourself.
Stay for a week or more, just message me to find out what’s available...now...

We love to experience everything from the historic villages, local foods, making new friends and finding old friends too. Deep and shallow anchorages, and sailing!! We love to have the sails out in all conditions from gentle breezes to fast heavy winds and bigger seas. The Sense 50 is very strong and powerful, yet graceful and elegant in the water. The whole experience is just amazing.
I am looking for crew that can contribute ideas, music, cooking, cleaning, photography, conversation, digital media assistance, etc.

YOU WILL (learn to) SAIL!!
We share expenses. This is an extremely luxury boat. Usually there are 2 to 6 aboard.
No experience necessary.
Boat is perfect and like new.
In the water.
Duane

One of the main goals of this adventure is to fully immerse into all the water sports. Sailing, surfing, diving, kiting etc.
. We have produced many videos to date, and I want to fully capture and share the whole experience ala La Vegabond or Delos. I will consider a long term, free space aboard for the qualified crew who can document and film, edit and produce media and manage the Digital content of grateful. Let’s talk.
In the water. Duane

  • Boat descriptionGRATEFUL will make you feel just like the name says. She is capable and beautiful. Have you seen the Beneteau Sense 50’s? Here’s a link https://youtu.be/dRh6I_nh4QQ. This boat is one of the only clean sheet designs that have hit the market in decades. She’s a 2012, and has been kept in like new condition. She looks and sails like damn near new, is clean and dry. Cruises well at 7.5 kts, but she likes 9 kts too! Stay a few days of a week or more. Share the costs and expenses as we go, (ie,plan on contributing 50 euro per day,) and experience an amazing adventure aboard Grateful!

Duane is an experienced open minded tolerant captain, fun interesting and willing to share his knowledge with the less experts member of the crew. I would absolutely recommend him and his confortable luxurious Grateful.

You will learn about life aboard!

I sailed with Duane for 16 days in July 2020, from Tarifa to, and around Ibiza. It was a very interesting and valuable experience on many levels. It differed from my previous cruising ventures, because Grateful (the boat) is Duane’s home. Cruising/sailing is Duane’s life, he is extremely knowledgeable and articulate and will explain and train you on any aspect of it - if you wish. It also means that you are a crew on board, do be prepared to do more then watches … you will need to pull your weight in terms of interior and exterior work, this includes cooking, shopping and occasionally some reasonable assistance with boat repairs (if you are capable to do such work). No slacking off, but there is also plenty of time for rest, relaxation and sleep. Duane is a strong and authentic personality and character, always easy going, honest, positive, kind. He is extremely extroverted, which attracts people like a magnet - I found myself in a company of other crew/sailors most of the time. This was both fun and educational. The experience he offers is so attractive, it creates competition amongst all the crew who want to join him on his journey! In his approach to crew Duane goes beyond being a skipper and is also a great host - he prepared some amazing barbecue meals on board, we had many long and interesting conversations, he took us on dinghy rides under the stars, and as a bonus i have a bunch of great photos he took of us. Duane is open, approachable and a great communicator, I was able to discuss anything with him, my wishes, my medical conditions as well as to seek advice on handling any issues with other crew members. Grateful (the boat) is gorgeous - slick, modern, comfortable and mostly automated, it has autopilot, electric winches, chart plotters right at the helm etc. In my 16 days on board I learnt a lot about what it means to be a good (and bad!) crew, sailed the boat at night through the storm, watched Dolphins race us near Gibraltar, did a tonne of yoga and sunbathing on deck, consumed some 5 star barbecues and got a very solid idea of what it means to be both the crew and full time live aboard captain. Warning: the food is good and you will get fat. I am Grateful.

Unforgettable memories onboard of Grateful

5

The time spent onboard Grateful, has been an enchanting journey. First of all, Duane is an amazing human, great sailor, he's always up to share his knowledge, make you participate and get sure you understand the reasons of any action. Always in a good mood, he calmly find solutions for any problem that could show up. Enjoying life from the good side, being on board with him is the promise of great conversations, good laughter, amazing discoveries along the different stops and of course AMAZING sailing, with great sensations as this boat is magic and the captain knows really well how to handle it let it express its full potential. I will definitely get back on board when I will have free time as those two weeks were an awake dream ! If you are looking to learn how to sail, in a friendly atmosphere where you will learn a lot humanely as well, creating life lasting memories, don't hesitate, Duane and Grateful are the combo you need ! Wishing you both fairwinds, See you soon captain !

Amazing experience

Unforgettable experience on Grateful. It's a very well maintained and equipped boat. We sailed over 800nm together from Spain over Marocco to the Canaries. Duane was always really kind and it was great fun with him. Thank you for everything! Hope to see you again!
