Expedition Crew Wanted for Crazy Adventure

We want you! We are looking for open minded, environmentally conscious, adventurous people to join our expedition, The Vortex Swim.

Long distance swimmer and ocean advocate Ben Lecomte is looking for new crew members to volunteer on a 3-month swimming/sailing expedition from Hawaii to California.

After spending 165 days at sea and swimming over 1500 nautical miles off the coast of Japan in 2018 for The Swim, Ben and crew were amazed by the ocean and all the random encounters with wildlife, more surprising than the wildlife however was the daily encounters with plastic and marine trash. Driven by this confronting experience, Ben and crew now plan to head into the highest concentration of ocean plastic in the world, commonly known as the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’.

We are seeking marine engineers, scientists, sailors, medics, videographers, photographers, influencers and plastic warriors available from May to September 2019. The crew will support Ben’s swim through the patch, while collecting scientific samples and sharing their story with the goal to raise awareness on plastic pollution and help uncover the myth of the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’.

Previous sailing experience is preferred but not required.

  • Boat descriptionThe Challenge 67' Class yachts were designed for The Challenge Business by David Thomas, specifically to race around the world “the wrong way”. The design brief called for exceptionally strong, seaworthy, fast, attractive, modern, steel yachts that were able to sail to windward across the Southern Ocean in relative comfort. Safety was paramount both in terms of structural strength and crew safety. Because of the One Design nature of the race, the design was not influenced or distorted by any rating rule and a sensible displacement was specified. Other important design considerations include, ease of access to the structure, equipment, systems, wiring and fittings for maintenance and inspections both at sea and in harbour. Every piece of equipment had to be robust enough to survive a race around the world with minimum maintenance.
