Learning to Fly

I am Bek, a wanderer learning the ropes in the Sea of Cortez before refitting the boat for an ocean voyage. The boat is a Contessa 32 that lived in La Paz for decades under a caring captain until I fell in love with her and bought her. We (the yacht and I) are cruising the Sea of Cortez for the time being. Although the single-handing experience has been a rewarding one, I have enjoyed taking on crew and sharing the love of sailing with others.

My cruising style is a bit laid back. My time is divided between islands, anchorages and the port. Currently making expeditions out of Marina Puerto Escondido. At anchorages, I like to snorkel, spearfish for dinner, go for a hike, and read. I try not to miss a good windy day to go somewhere new. If I am at port with no wind, I try to cross the mountains over Baja and surf for a week or two on the Pacific side.

The next big item on the list is to cross the Pacific to the French Polynesia. I am hoping a potential crew and I will get to do some island hopping and cruising in Mexico before committing to a big voyage. This time will also be used for gradual upgrade of systems at various ports.

All costs and living on the boat is covered and I maybe able to help some with airfare.

  • Boat descriptionThe boat is an absolute sailing machine. She sprints ahead of other boats like a dream with 30 degree of apparent wind at the nose. Yet, she has the sea-kindly demeanor of a heavy cruising boat with half of her weight being in the keel. Her sister ships have survived the infamous Fastnet Race of 1979 and brought these boats timeless reverence and legendary status among the admirers and haters alike. She is the prettiest and fiercest boat in the entire Sea of Cortez. Navigation gear on the boat is adequate with , IPhone, backup GPS, and paper charts. Starlink internet allows daily updates on weather. I have a PLB for long hikes on islands and DSC radios. Sails are almost new, including an inventory of light wind sails. I have installed LifePO4 batteries and 440W solar with a future water-maker in mind.
