Offshore sailing: Porto to Faro, Portugal

I'm currently in Porto and hoping to spend the winter at Bruce's Yard in Faro.

This pretty much means that I need to make the remainder of the trip by the end of the month, so one or two additional crew members would be handy.

Please don't message me if you're not currently nearby, in Spain or Portugal - I will doubt your judgement if you're prepared to travel hundreds of miles and then put to sea with a skipper you've never met. I'd like us to meet and see how well we get along before making any commitment about sailing together.

I'm looking for someone with sailing experience - it doesn't need to be that much, but you'll need to be confident or comfortable in strong winds. You need to have some experience of helming, so I can leave you in the cockpit alone and get some sleep.

This trip will involve passages of at least 24 hours, if we don't undertake it as a single hop.

  • Boat descriptionIris is a comfortable offshore sailing yacht with enclosed doghouse and all lines led back. As crew you have a cabin to yourselves - it has two bunks, one of which converts to a double, so should be quite comfortable for one or two. Unusually for a boat of her size, Iris is tiller-steered - one prospective crew was severely disconcerted by this but, on the contrary, in fact it makes her a joy to sail. In fine weather Iris is easy to singlehand, and she can be sailed like a dinghy, with one hand on the tiller and the other holding the mainsheet.
