Watch: Easy handling at high speed

Join the crew around the globe or for stages

In 2021 I have started a long term round the globe trip in the Baltic Sea sailing along the Swedish coast, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal to the Canary Islands by the end of November 2022.
On February 2023 we arrived at Martinique after a 18 days crossing of the Atlantic. This season ended in June with the boat now being on the dry at Chaguaramas, Trinidad.
The next season will start in November/December 2023 sailing the West Indies heading North towards the US East coast and later to Canada. Therefore, opportunities will arise along the way.
For gender balance female crew member(s) would match best mostly male crew. We are humorous, kind and highly committed to sail safe and respectful to one another, to the nature and to places we are going to visit. This is all about enjoying life.
The routing format is based on a rather open planning leaving plenty of space and time to visit locations on the go.
My preference is a crew of up to 6 persons where some slots are already taken but openings come and go. Also, I prefer crew that tends to stay longer e.g. 3 weeks and more.
Commitment to be part of a crew and contribute is more important than skills. I can teach you what is needed and bring you up to speed in a short while. If you are looking for a cheap passage or just want to do what you already know, try another boat.
We all contribute to the running cost on an equal basis, this is not for profit. Count for food, diesel and marinas approx. 15 - 40 € per day depending mostly on the use of marinas where costs are higher than at anchor.
I shall update this posting regularly, keep in touch or write a message if you have a question. To follow our route go on Marinetraffic and search for Journeyman under Swiss flag to see the actual position.

Sailing the Caribbean

5

I have just returned from two wonderful weeks on Journeyman60 sailing the Caribbean, swimming and snorkeling, exploring the islands on foot or by car and just enjoying life. What I really like about Gerhard is that he is not only a great skipper (see all the comments below), but also super interesting as a person, and he always brings together equally interesting people on board. Thank you Gerhard, Ev and Hélène for the many inspiring conversations, laughing and cooking together and improving my French language skills. I had a great time and would love to join again.

Would join anytime again!

The three weeks on Journeyman were a great and enlightening experience. Gerhard is a very experienced skipper with whom we always felt safe. It was impressive how calm and relaxed a skipper can be during difficult mooring manoeuvres with such a big boat like Journeyman! During the sailing he gave us clearly understandable instructions and was always ready to answer our questions in detail. As a person, Gerhard is also very relaxed and humorous. We had an exciting exchange, both about sailing and personal topics. Hope to see you again soon!

Portugal to Guadeloupe

I have been so lucky to spend two long stretches on Journeyman with Gerhard. Firstly down the coast of Portugal, Spain and a 5 day crossing to the Canaries. Then the transatlantic crossing to Martinique followed by some sailing in the Caribbean. If you get the opportunity to join the yacht I would highly recommend it. Gerhard is a knowledgeable and patient skipper. Safety is prioritised including introductory briefings, excellent safety equipment and sensible decision making. He knows every square inch of the boat having spent a lot of time refitting it and that means when components have broken he has been able to fix them using his incredible supply of tools and spare parts. The company onboard has been excellent (thanks Gerhard, Ev, Franzi, Michelle, Maxi, Leon, Peter, Silvano) and the food menu impressive (thanks especially to Ev)! Costs (food, diesel, moorings) are split fairly between all crew using an app which makes it easy and fully transparent. I have enjoyed the experience so much and am very grateful for the chance to share in Gerhard's adventure.

Can‘t wait to join again!

It‘s difficult to say something about Gerhard and his beautiful yacht Journeyman 60 that hasn‘t been said before. Gerhard is a technically skilled, laid back, humorous skipper, happy to explain and always interested in you as a person. I had a great time on the boat with hin and his crew consisting of 4 Crewbay women (incl. me) and cannot wait to go again!

Thoroughly enjoyable

My two weeks onboard Journeyman were a combination of great people, a capable, safe and interesting boat in near mint condition, delicious, varied, healthy and fun cooking and fun, fast sailing. We got to see the countries we visited with some good hikes, anchorages, marinas and restaurants. The best part was clearly the crew: Spirits were high, we had many interesting discussions and Gerhard is a capable, patient skipper who is willing to share his knowledge and takes safety seriously. If you get the chance to be part of this crew, take it! Thanks for making my stay so enjoyable and i look forward to my next journey onboard.

Brest to Gijon

This was my first time on a sailing boat. I spent 1 month on the journeyman and this trip exceeded my expectations. Gerhard and the crew were patient to teach me the basics for being helpful since the first day. I learnt how to tie the essential knots, how the rigs of the boat work, how to adjust the course according to the wind, how to jibe and how to tack and much more. The journeyman is impressive, a 17.50 meters (60 ft) aluminum boat that feels safe and comfortable. She has an amazing design and she sails fast. Gerhard is a fantastic person, experienced in sailing but what I appreciated even more were his life experiences. He is so interesting and knowledgeable but down to earth at the same time. Everyone told me how lucky I was to have him as a captain in my first sailing trip and I am truly grateful that it happened. Now I'm even more convinced to buy my sailing boat in a few years. I cannot write everything here but what I could say is to contact him and you will discover it by yourself. You will not regret it. Thank you Gerhard, thanks to Leon/Margot/Franz/Eve, you are amazing. I can't wait to come onboard again.

Pornichet to Bilbao

The reviews by Margo and Tommse, perfectly summarise my experience as well. The boat is extraordinary and has the perfect balance between comfort and performance. Gerhard is a fantastic host and you feel immediately at home. He is very experienced, calm, friendly and enjoys the good things in life including great conversations. One specific addition to the reviews below is the fact that I was very impressed with the safety induction at the start of my journey, this is clearly one of the best practices I've ever seen. Overall, a fantastic experience and I feel truly lucky to have sailed with Journeyman.

St-Malo to Quiberon

My two weeks aboard journeyman was an extraordinary experience. It was an honour to have been invited to join in someone’s passion-project, to have the gift of sailing a one-off custom boat that has been so carefully and interestingly designed, knowing only a handful of people have ever operated it. I learned so much about the kind of captain I would like to be. Gerhard, Franz, and the other crew are intelligent, considerate, respectful, and calm people, who see the positive, and laugh with ease. They love good food and good conversation (hehe music is negotiable…). Gerhard loves the vessel his friends helped him to create, and the life that you may get to share with him for some weeks. I hope to be aboard again. My heart smiles when I think of my time there; it smiles for them, and their onward journey.

Cool boat, skipper and crew, highly recommended. Easy going sailing and captain, no pressure, relaxed atmosphere on board. The boat is fast and comfortable, fully equipped for long distance navigation even at high latitudes. Great experience!
