Captain / Engineer

November 2022 - Currently in Palma de Mallorca. Will be visiting family in Canada for Christmas and in early new year going to Ft Lauderdale for short visit before heading to Caribbean for winter. I am open to interesting opportunities wherever that may take me.
---------------------------------
A passionate sailor! Highly experienced, a loyal & committed seafarer with strong work ethic & wealth of experience on vessels up to 28m. Have sailed the Americas, Caribbean, UK, NW Europe, the Med, Atlantic & Pacific crossings, logging 50,000+ Nm (70% sail, 30% power). Have worked monohulls and cats in both charter and private operations.

Seeking long term position on well-found yacht, in private or charter operations. Happy to consider seasonal roles and delivery work. An adventurer, keen on circumnavigation or high latitude voyaging. Canadian passport and seaman's book, B1/B2 and Schengen visas. Fully vaccinated and boosted. Willing and able to travel to new opportunities anywhere on the planet.

Engineering skills developed from vast experience with agricultural machinery, aviation (jet engines), heavy equipment, and yachting. Very confident in vessel operations and systems maintenance. Excellent and natural boat handling skills with exceptional situational awareness. Possess comprehensive set of essential leadership & admin skills from 25 year business career.

Fit, healthy, hard working, a team player and experienced leader. Educated, emotionally intelligent, enthusiastic, responsible and discrete. A loyal, dedicated professional aspiring to leave others with positive impressions. Have a social conscience, respectful of others, easy to get on with and fun to be around. Enjoy teaching and mentoring new sailors who are keen to learn, and more generally being a good example to all.

Additional Skills:
Owned and managed insurance consulting agency specialized in group insurance and pensions plans for mid sized companies managing contracts with annual cash flow of several million dollars. Worked closely with high net worth business owners, CEO’s, CFO’s, and HR Executives. Skilled in budgeting and detailed financial reporting to clients. Developed skills in relationship management, contract negotiations, and crisis intervention. Excellent knowledge of PC computers and networks. Advanced user of MS Office, a variety of accounting and other software, including maritime navigation and weather forecasting tools.
---------------------------------
After 20 years of recreational sailing (some 20,000 Nm on bareboat charters and deliveries), sold business in 2019 on prospect of completing 5 yr circumnavigation. Joined Lagoon 620 in Barcelona as Captain and after just four months, vessel was lost in foreclosure following owner’s bankruptcy. Moved to Palma de Mallorca July 2020 and spent next year attaining commercial yachting certifications. Now hold commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Ocean for Sail & Power plus several OOW modules. Ambition for circumnavigation remains strong.

Have accumulated more than 50,000 nautical miles with experience on both sides of N America, Central America, Caribbean, UK, NW Europe, the Med, and W Africa. Have crossed the Atlantic several times in both directions, also crossed Panama and Pacific to French Polynesia. Perform well in heavy weather and not prone to sea-sickness.

Enjoy cooking and my culinary skills are welcome in most galleys. Love SCUBA diving, hold PADI Rescue Diver certificate and completed most Divemaster certification training. Avid golfer, enjoy hiking, Alpine and Nordic skiing. Maintain routine fitness program, a healthy diet, and have strength, stamina, agility and the appearance of a man much younger than my age suggests. Drug free, light alcohol use, no tattoos.
---------------------------------
I am naturally curious and without prejudice, enjoy people of all ages and ethnicity. Love the sea, adventuring off the beaten track, and enjoy exposure to new cultures. Have a social conscience and will, when possible, lend a hand to help those in need. Will always do my part in helping to leave this earth a place better than when I arrived.

Q&A

2

Q: What’s your favourite boating experience? Atlantic Crossing - St Maarten to Barcelona onboard Oyster 56. Love blue water sailing best!!!

Q: What’s your worst boating experience? Dismasted 800 miles east of Bahamas aboard 68' New Horizon Ketch. In a night time squall, bow stem let go, headsail flew over mast like a kite and pulled both poles back down towards stern. Flattened dodger and fortunate there were no serious injuries. Invaluable lessons learned on how to manage catastrophic failures. Lessons also learned about sailing rigs, problem areas and what to look for to prevent such failures. I am a wiser sailor because of this - knock on wood I never experience such an accident again.
