Watchleader/Mate looking for affordable mile building or longer/transatlantic deliveries
I am a 25 year old engineering student from northern Germany and looking for offshore experiences, such as deliveries and miles building.
I do have ~5000 nm sailing experience, mostly sailed on a 65 ft gaff-schooner and 30-70ft bermuda rigged monohulls in the Baltic and North Sea (tiny little bit in the mediteranean as well). I have sailed ~2500 nm as first mate and watchleader in a watch system and at night, have never been taken out by seasickness and am physically and mentally fit.
I am a reasonable helmsmen, can trim sails, reef etc. I can cook and do the regular work that comes with operating a sailing boat and being at sea.
Amongst other things, I have yet to practice with spinnaker handling, have never sailed a multihull and would like to aquire more skills in both areas (though at this point I feel I'm probably more a monuhull guy).
I would describe myself as a calm and collected person, easy to get along with and reliable (also based on feedback I get). I am rather on the introverted side of the spectrum but appreciate live onboard as a crew.
I am also a (gliding) flight instructor and feel that while I could be a more experienced sailor, the mental side of sailing is similar to flying in many ways. I am used to operating in an environment that demands quick decisionmaking and risk-awareness.
I am really fascinated by the practical sides of weather and oceanography and have attended and passed the exam of a university course about "Practical Maritime Meteorology for nautical officers". Obersving weather information and formations and applying learned understanding to the real thing is fun :-)
Also, if conditions permit, I like to bring at least my small training sextant along , since I find celestial navigation to be a very rewarding occupation (I picked it up during Covid-lockdown and feel proficient by now).
At this point I only have the ICC for inland and coastal waters and the long range VHF certificate.
However, I am working on the “Sportseeschifferschein”( german equivalent to YM Offshore). I'm not a "license collector" and mainly want to gain experience and skills but also have in mind to eventually take the YM Offshore in the medium term future, once I have more experience.
I am particularly interested in longer passages and looking forward to gaining more experience, and knowledge!
Also, having my first Atlantic crossing (E to W or W to E) has been on my mind for quite some time. But shorter passages within or close to Europe are definitely of interest for me.
If you need crew and think that I could fit in, please get in touch!
Fair winds,
Julian
