(Currently on land in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic)
Hi! I'm a long-term traveler who loves to check out new places all over the world. I'm good at getting along with strangers, having hitchhiked thousands of miles and couchsurfed a lot in North America, Europe, and Asia. I travel light, can swim, and don't get seasick.
I have one 1,600-mile passage under my belt (non-stop Florida to Panama), including plenty of experience keeping watch day and night as well as steering (both manually and with Hydrovane). And then I did a six-week trip recently up through the Bahamas from the Dominican Republic, mostly by day but including a few night watches. Don't really have the knowledge to handle rigging on my own, but I understand the basics, and can tie a bowline. Comfortable on boats (not easily seasick) and confident in the water, experienced with snorkeling, and good with maps.
Have passport and do border crossings all the time. Island hopping is more interesting to me than long passages, but I'm not too picky.
Besides my two big sailing experiences, my general experience on the water includes 1,000 miles as a passenger on dozens of ferries of all sizes worldwide, as well as some kayaking in both ocean and rivers, including small rapids (class 1-2).
I travel very light (just a medium-sized backpack) and am used to getting by on very little money, but I'm not broke. I have a small amount of income from my online business and can contribute if the amount is comparable to what I'd be spending daily on land anyway. US$20/day range or lower is ideal, but could make exceptions.
I'm a skilled and enthusiastic birdwatcher (helps keep my eyes on the sea during day watches) and working on mastering reef fish identification too (have snorkel, but no diving experience). I also have good spatial skills and sense of direction, a solid head on my shoulders, and the ability to learn new things fast. Good at keeping my cool under pressure.
