SAILING THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC
The tall ship Alvei is looking for new crew for the 2018/2019 sailing season. We began with a 6-week program that includes sail training and deck maintenance. Each day includes instruction and hands on practice to make the ship and crew ready for sea.
Previous sailing experience is not required. Be ready to bring a good attitude, a helping hand, and whatever expert knowledge and/or skills you might possess.

After the passage from Brisbane to New Zealand, 2 months of maintenance, and a 28 day passage, our crew is getting ready for aid projects in the remote islands around Fiji, and then we will be headed back to NZ
We are currently anchored in Suva, Fiji making repairs and provisioning. We will be doing humanitarian aid work in remote outer island villages through November. Then we need crew to help us sail back to NZ.
We have been sailing Alvei throughout the world’s oceans from 1995 to the present. We have logged over 200,000 sea miles and stood watch with over 500 crew.
We are looking for a few new volunteers to join the crew. We are usually about a dozen, averaging about six men and women each; we don’t plan it that way, it just works that way. The average age is twenty to thirty-something with a scattering of people in their forties to sixties. Volunteers also join us from all over the world. We’ve had as many as 15 people from 13 different nationalities on one crew alone.
Once a person accumulates one year of service (either continuously or several shorter stints) they are eligible to sail on Alvei at any time, free of charge. We ask returning crew bring a gift for the ship.
Sea Time will be officially documented and applied toward earning sea time credit towards certification.
We have three categories of volunteer crew, short-term, medium-term and long-term. On the average about a third of volunteers are 3 weeks to 2 months, another third 3 to 4 months and another third 1-2 years.
There are 3 watches: 12 to 4, 4 to 8 and 8 to 12. Duties include standing watch 4 hours on and 8 hours off when underway. At anchor each watch has the duty for one day. The other wateches can go ashore. We run the shore boat, cook, clean and do maintenance. There is an anchor watch every night. There is a dogwatch every 2 weeks.
No one is required to perform jobs they are not comfortable with, such as working aloft. We can accommodate up to 15 volunteer crew.
Volunteer mission:
During the time in Fiji we are doing an Aid Project in the remote outer islands of Fiji, the Yasawas and Lao seascape -rebuilding a village destroyed by cyclone Winston and installing drinking water tanks.
End of November is a 5-week passage to New Zealand.
December is summer in South Island until April 2019.
It requires knowledge, experience, time and practice to learn the way of the sea. Patience and a resilient sense of humour will help when mastering the sometimes-unexpected events of the day or night. Learning can be gained from reading books and by working with your shipmates.
Life on board can become a time of reward and accomplishment. And you will definitely have many stories to tell along the way.
