Looking for a Novice Crew, Competent Crew or Voluntary work position
Hi -My wife and I have just joined Crewbay. We are interested in finding a position as Novice Crew, Competent Crew or Voluntary work.
We are Alan & Cathy Low - a couple seeking to trade in our land based life - we have a guest house in Ballater, in the Cairngorms Park, Scottish highlands and a house in Stromness, Orkney Islands - to learn about sailing and eventually live aboard our own boat and ultimately sail where we want to go.
As well as running the guest house, we have lived adventurous, hard working lives, travelling extensively and working in Asia. We have run an English language school here in Ballater, devised English teaching programmes for the maritime industry and have spent time on North Sea supply boats delivering the maritime English programmes to Spanish and Portuguese crews.
Our English teaching included training and leading teams of volunteer teachers (mainly UK students) to carry out well organised teaching programmes in India and Sri Lanka (where we have a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Education).
We have great practical skills, having renovated and rebuilt cars (land rovers - including the stripping down and rebuilding of perkins diesel engine). Plumbing, electrical work, painting, maintenance, and awareness of what needs to be done are among our practical skills. Cooking, cleaning and being well organised could be added to the list.
We are broad minded, good company, hard working, flexible and able to work out how to deal with whatever comes are way, we enjoy learning languages and combined hobbies include: gardening, hill walking, yoga, dancing, reading, cooking, travelling, meeting people, learning new skills - at the moment we are reading up on RYA Competent Crew and Navigation and hope to either complete the practical training this winter and/or volunteer onboard someone’s boat to get experience and knowledge.
Although now getting older (70 and 63 years young!), we are both fit, healthy and open to learning. We could be available to join a boat anywhere in the world from mid November.
We are happy to join anywhere in the world, although warmer climes may be more appealing and we would volunteer to do whatever is needed on deck, in pilot house or galley, within our limited scope and would hope to become more useful as the days passed as we developed more competence with deck work, watch keeping and navigation.
Happy to join and happy to learn and happy to be at sea!
